A ROOF IS A CANVAS.

Group C ran from 1982, and the cars are remembered as well as any in racing. The usual explanation is that the era had better taste. A more useful one is that the rulebook required an enclosing body, kept the upper surfaces clear, and squeezed the whole car into a 10cm band of permitted height. What came out was the largest continuous surface prototype racing has put on a track, and a surface that size flatters almost anything drawn on it.
None of the rules below mention appearance. All of them shaped it.
Why do Group C cars look the way they do?
The category is defined in one line of Article 257 of the 1982 FIA Appendix J: two-seater competition cars built specially for races on closed circuits. Everything after that is dimensions, weight and fuel.
Three requirements did the visual work.

The first three are the ones that matter here. The body had to enclose the car, the wheels had to be covered, and anything a designer needed for cooling had to be found below the line of the roof, which is precisely where a graphic wants to live.
Did Group C ban open cars?
No. It is often written that it did, and the regulation says otherwise.
Article 257 provides for open cars in three separate places. The bodywork article specifies how the opening above the seats must be arranged on an open car. The extinguisher table gives different capacities for open and closed cars. The circuit breaker has a different mandated position on each.
What the rules did was make a coupé the obvious answer. A compulsory laminated windscreen whose top edge had to sit at least 100cm from the ground, under a ceiling of 110cm overall, with two doors carrying windows. Work through that and you have drawn most of a closed car before making a single aerodynamic decision.
What a continuous body does for a livery
The result is a shape that runs from the nose over the screen and roof to the tail as one form. A stripe can cross the whole length. A colour division can pass over the roof and land in the same place on the far flank.
On an open prototype the cockpit interrupts the car exactly where continuity is most useful. The opening cuts the top in half, the roll structure breaks whatever runs over it, and a scheme that starts on the nose has to stop and restart behind the driver.
Add the intake rule and the upper surfaces stay clear as well. Large area, few interruptions, long unbroken lines front to back. Nobody set out to make a good canvas. The rulebook made one as a side effect.

The fuel formula, not an engine formula
The other half of the category was consumption.
For 1982 and 1983 a car could carry a maximum of 100 litres on board, with refuelling stops capped by distance: five for a race between 830 and 1,000km, twelve for a 12-hour race, twenty-five for a 24-hour race. Five stops plus the start is 600 litres to cover 1,000km. The regulation then states that for 1984 and after, the permitted quantity would be reduced.
Engine capacity was not capped. The engine did have to be recognised by a manufacturer that had already homologated cars in Group A or B, or come from such a car, but within that all modifications were allowed. Rotary against turbocharged flat six against V12.
A fixed fuel allocation makes efficiency the objective rather than peak power. Aerodynamic drag is a large part of that at racing speed, so low drag becomes valuable, though it is traded against downforce and against how efficiently the engine uses what it has. It is not as simple as drag becoming the only thing that matters. But it pushes bodywork toward smooth, closed, low-disturbance forms, and those are the same forms that carry flat colour well.
Why different-shaped cars matter
Leaving engines open produced grids where the cars were not variations on one silhouette. Different engines mean different cooling, different intake requirements, different proportions.
That variety is worth something in itself. It is the same argument the governing body made in 2025 when it set a minimum painted area on Formula 1 cars, which we wrote about in how racing liveries are designed. If the cars stop being distinguishable, something has gone wrong.
How Group C ended
From 1989 the formula moved toward 3.5-litre naturally aspirated engines on the Formula 1 model, abandoning the fuel-consumption principle the category had been built on. Race distances were cut at the same time. Turbocharged cars remained eligible for a period rather than disappearing overnight.
The regulatory package is widely identified as a major contributor to what followed, though it was not the only factor. Manufacturer budgets, withdrawals and the wider economy all played a part. The world championship's last season was 1992, the planned 1993 season was cancelled for lack of entries, and Group C machinery made its final significant appearance at Le Mans that year.
Why we keep coming back to it
Two of the three cars in our first drop ran under these rules. The flat colour, the hard edges, the shapes that cross an entire body without stopping. None of that was a stylistic decision anyone made. It was what the surface allowed, and the surface was written into Article 257 before a designer touched it.
