Racing liveries are designed inside a surface that has already been divided up. Regulations reserve space for numbers and mandatory markings. Commercial contracts allocate the best panels to whoever paid most for them. The designer composes with what is left, and a great deal of what looks like a creative decision is somebody solving around a fixed point.
The rules are more specific than almost anyone writes down, so this piece uses Formula 1 as the worked example. Not because the sport matters most, but because it publishes its regulations and other series largely do not.
If you want the definition before the design process, start with what a racing livery is and how that visual identity developed.
How does the design process actually work?
Livery designer Michael Santoro, whose work runs from a Vector M12 to Audi RS 3 race cars, describes a process that begins with a conversation rather than a brief. He asks the client what they want the car to look like, then keeps going: what music they like, which painters, what they do outside cars. Sketching comes next, freehand, on paper. Only then does it move into 3D, which he describes as the point where the energy of a sketch is easiest to lose.
Commercial pressure arrives later and gets heavier as the racing gets more serious. His description of the job is walking a tightrope between art and commerce.
That tension is the subject. The designer works forwards. The surface has already been carved up behind them.
What do the rules actually require?
From the FIA 2026 Formula 1 Regulations, Section A, Articles A2.3 and A2.4:

Two of those are worth sitting with.
A livery has to be substantially similar on both sides of the same car. Asymmetric designs, the kind that look striking in a render from one angle, are not available. Whatever gets drawn has to work twice.

And a material change to a livery during a season needs the agreement of both the governing body and the commercial rights holder. A livery is not the team's to change at will.
There is also a content rule. Advertising that is political or religious, or that the governing body considers prejudicial to its own interests, is prohibited outright.
How do you tell two teammates apart?
Not by the livery, because the regulation requires both cars to run the same one.
The answer is a camera housing. The on-board camera above the roll structure on one car stays as supplied. On the other car it must be predominantly fluorescent yellow.

That is the entire mechanism. Two cars, identical schemes, and the distinguishing mark is a small yellow object on top of one of them.
It is a useful thing to know about how this discipline works. The identity problem gets solved at the smallest available scale, because every larger surface is already committed to something else.
The 55% rule
For 2026 the governing body went further. Following a Commission meeting in November 2025, it was agreed that a minimum of 55% of a car's surface area must be covered by painted or stickered livery rather than left as bare carbon fibre, with the stated objective of increasing visual differentiation between cars.

The reason is weight. Paint weighs something, minimum weight limits are tight, and teams had been leaving large areas of bare carbon to save grams. The cars got harder to tell apart as a result.
So there is now a floor on how much of a car has to be recognisable. That is a governing body treating identifiability as a requirement rather than a preference, which is the clearest statement anyone has made about what a livery is actually for.
Who gets the best surfaces
The space left over is not distributed evenly, and not by the designer. According to motorsport sponsorship agency RTR Sports, commercial partnerships are structured hierarchically and the tiers map to named panels: title and principal partners take the nose cone, engine cover and full sidepods, primary partners take the next band of high-visibility positions, and associate and technical partners appear on the rear wing, the mirrors and secondary positions.
The ranking follows the camera. Front-of-car surfaces generate roughly 2 to 3 times the impressions of rear surfaces, and placement gets priced on qualified visible-screen seconds, weighted by audience and by cost per thousand impressions. The best real estate is decided by a broadcast director, not by an eye.
Why liveries are built from flat blocks
The practical reason liveries favour large areas of flat colour over intricate artwork is repair.
Contact damage is normal and panels get swapped mid-race. One livery studio notes that it favours weight-optimised vector-cut vinyl over full wraps, partly for weight and partly to allow rapid panel replacement during race weekends. A design made of discrete blocks can have one section reprinted and refitted quickly. A photographic gradient running across three panels cannot.

Flat colour and hard edges were a maintenance requirement before they were a style.

The car is not a flat surface
A livery is drawn flat and applied to compound curves. That is geometry rather than opinion. A band of constant width narrows where the body turns away from the viewer, and a shape drawn as a rectangle lands as a trapezoid. Designs get distorted deliberately in the file so they read correctly on the object.

Then the surface gets interrupted. Ducts, intakes, mirrors, panel joins. A design that ignores them looks like a sticker laid over a car. A design that acknowledges them looks like the car.
It is the same problem as fitting a flat pattern to a moving body, which is why translating a livery onto clothing is less of a leap than it sounds.
So where does colour come in?
Late, and with less freedom than you would think. By the time it is chosen, the base colour usually belongs to whoever bought the car, and the job is finding the second and third colours that survive everything above: a number that has to read from the front at 160mm, a camera at distance, a panel change, a mirror image of itself on the other flank.
Which is why the schemes people still remember tend to be the most constrained ones. Two colours, large shapes, hard edges. Not restraint as a taste. Restraint as what was left standing.
